In January 2013 I split a cigarette with a HIV + person.I only put it one time in may mouth.2 weeks later I had fever which lasted for 1 evening. The same night I had night sweats. 2 months later I had a white tongue, night sweats and felt fatigue lasting 1 week. In September 2013 I had diarrhea and stomach pain lasting for abut 10 days. In November 2013 I had a rash with big red areas on my bell. They were itchy for the first day and lasted for 1 week. Are these symptoms of HIV? Is it possible too get HIV from sharing a cigarette if there was blood on cigarette filter. Do I need to test for this episode? Thanks a lot

Hi

The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested. We cannot guess at whether you have HIV from symptoms. However, HIV is not passed through sharing cigarettes because it is not found in saliva. If there were blood on the cigarette you would have to have an open area on your lips for there to be a possibility of getting HIV.

Many people have no symptoms when they get HIV. If they do, they may have a flu-like illness lasts more than one day. Many other viruses or illnesses besides HIV can cause the other symptoms you describe.

In BC, our tests are about 95% accurate at 4 -6 weeks, but it can take up to 12 weeks for a test to be accurate. It sounds like you are many months past that window, so a test you had now should be conclusive.
