Home / Answered Questions / Hello nurse . Thank you for your job . I have ruled out hiv-1 with several fourth generation tests but i am worrying about hiv-2 . I have a small bump behind my neck , i can move it if i press and is not hard . I had it when i first went for my hiv test in the right size of my neck then it disappeared 2 weeks ago and now it showed up on my left side of neck always behind it , can this be a symptom of hiv-2 ? My doctor checked all my lymph nodes ( i requested ) and he told me that i have them normal . I know hiv-2is less common but is there and anyone can get infected since i do not know what sexual activity my ex partner had , neither with whom . Is it more than 19 weeks ? ( this is when i took my last hiv test a duo one , 4th gen . Is a fourth generation hiv test good to detect hiv1/2 antibodies or i should take a 3rd generation test ? I had all negatives but i can not find an answer when hiv-2 is conclusive . I just want to put this behind me and move on . Would you tell me , if i was your patient , worrying about hiv1/hiv2 , that i am negative after 7 hiv tests blood ones sent in lab that i can move on and i am in clear from hiv 1 and hiv – 2 ?

Hi

The 4th generation HIV test we use in BC Canada checks for both HIV-1 and HIV-2. This test is 95% accurate by 6 weeks and would give you a final result by 3 months.

There are no symptoms that are caused by just having HIV. The symptoms people get with a HIV illness are common symptoms that can be caused by many different conditions. The only way you can find out if you have HIV is to go for a HIV test.

As you have a non-reactive HIV test at 19 weeks, I would say that you do not have HIV.

It is common for us to see people who are still worried about HIV even though their HIV test is negative.  If this is happening to you have a look at our worry page, it has some helpful tips on what to do in this situation.
