Home / Answered Questions / Hello thank you very much for taking time out of your busy schedule to write me. I’ve two questions. 1) HIV AG/AB test at 3 months, accuracy does it include HIV 2 as well. On my test result it says, “This test is designed to detect the p24 antigen (presence of virus), antibodies to HIV-1 groups M and O, and antibodies to HIV-2”. 2) My exposure was on August 21.2013 and I took this HIV test on November 21.2013. Did I take the test at the recommended time? Thanks

Hi

In BC, the HIV tests we use are accurate after 3 months. These are antibody and P24 tests. Your test was done at the recommended time (3 months) so you do not need to repeat it for the contact you had in August.

An exception is if you took Pep (post exposure prophylaxis). These are drugs taken for one month after a sexual contact to prevent HIV. In that case, we recommend you get tested again at 6 months.
