I am not sure whether the man was urinating or masturbating. Suddenly a drop of liquid flew and got into my eyes. I am not sure whether it was urine or semen. Considering the fact that the liquid substance that got into my eyes was semen and the man urinating or masturbating by the road was hiv positive. Is there any possibility that i might have acquired hiv from this exposure? Do i need to get tested?

Hi

It is possible for HIV to be transmitted if you get semen in your eyes. If someone has HIV, their semen will have HIV in it and the eye’s (a mucous membrane) can be a way for HIV to get into the body. Even though it is possible for this to happen it is not a common way for HIV to pass.

If someone did get semen in their eye’s the best thing to do would be to rinse well with water.

In the situation you described I would not be concerned as I think the most likely situation was that the person was taking a pee (urinating) beside the road.

In regard to HIV testing I would recommend talking with you local health care professional. They would be able to discuss with you the different ways that HIV are passed, what is happening in your life and recommend any testing.

The main way that HIV is passed is by having unprotected vaginal and rectal sex and by sharing equipment that could have blood on it e.g. sharing needles, reusing medical equipment that has not been sterilized etc…
