Hi and thanks for your question. The reason there seems to be inconsistent advice on when to test, is because the incubation time for syphilis is between 10 to 90 days. Incubation time means the time from infection to appearance of symptoms. The average incubation period for syphilis is 3-6 weeks and the majority of tests at this time will pick up a syphilis infection regardless of symptoms being present. If you have been tested early, e.g 10 days; then it is recommended that you test again to confirm your results once the incubation period has passed so at 3 months/90 days. If syphilis exposure is a concern in your sexual practice, then routine testing every 3 months is recommended. Health Nurse
