Home / Answered Questions / Hi, I am a 30yr old gay man and I recently got diagnosed with rectal chlamydia. I was given 1500mg of azithromycin which I took in a single dose and my Boyfriend was also given the same dose and we both took it together. We engaged in unprotected sex about 2weeks after the single dose of azithromycin. 1) Is there a high chance we might have reinfected each other?. We both didn’t have any sexual encounters with anyone during the treatment. I tested negaitive for rectal chlamydia 1 week after unprotected anal Sex with my Boyfriend. 2) does 1 dose, 1500mg of azithromycin able to cure chlamydia located in multiple parts of the body? Please advice. Thank you. Regards, Jay

Hi, thanks for your questions. The azithromycin  that you were given is the standard treatment for chlamydia wherever it is in the throat, penis or rectum. When you take the azithromycin, it treats the chlamydia in all parts of your body. So for instance if chlamydia was present in your throat but was not detected on the throat swab, the azithromycin you have taken would have treated this too. The treatment is considered effective when you and your partner were both treated and  abstained from sex for  one week so you would both considered to be treated and clear to have sex then. There is no risk that you would reinfect each other at the 2 week mark as you are both treated. Hope this helps. Health Nurse
