Home / Answered Questions / Hi, I am just wondering if can you get HIV from oral sex? A girl of unknown status gave me oral sex for a few minutes. I also performed oral sex on her for about a minute. Can you get HIV from this? HIV doctors at medhelp said that a standard antibody test at 6 weeks is accurate. You said that at 8 weeks a standard antibody test is 98% accurate. I got tested 7 weeks and 4 days at Bute Street Clinic. It was negative. I asked the guy on the phone how accurate this is at 7-8 weeks and he said it’s accurate as it can be. What do you think? I also got tested for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Syphillis at 7 weeks and 4 days. Should i be concern about this?

Hi

1) Oral sex and HIV/STIs

HIV is not a risk when you give oral sex to a woman. It is possible to get gonorrhea and Chlamydia, but these STIs are not commonly passed this way. HPV (warts), syphilis and herpes are easily passed when giving oral sex.

HIV is not passed when you get oral sex.  Chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV, syphilis and herpes are easily passed when you get oral sex.

2) Testing

The HIV test is 95% accurate at 6 weeks. That means there is a five percent chance that the test result will change between 8 – 12 weeks.

The Chlamydia and gonorrhea tests done 7 weeks after contact should be accurate.

Most of the time syphiilis testing is accurate 6 weeks after contact,  but it can take up to 12 weeks.

Check out  STIs at a Glance for more info on when to get accurate testing.
