Hi
You can go for a HIV test at anytime. You just have to be careful when you test if you want to check for a certain event. To be sure HIV was not passed to you just make sure you do the test after the window period is over. The window period is the time it takes for HIV to show up on a test after it was passed to you.
The most common HIV test used in BC is the 4th generation blood test. We find that this test is 95% accurate by 6 weeks and would give you a final result at 3 months. At 3-weeks it would be 65% accurate.
If you are concerned about what happened, you could always come in and do an initial test and do another test when the window period is over.
We also have an early detection HIV test that is available at some of our clinics that is 90% accurate by 2 weeks. We are able to do this test at these clinics if the person has a high chance of HIV passing to them.
If you are looking for a clinic for a HIV test, have a look at our clinic finder.
