After I finished my job in the toilet, I was washing my hand in the wash basin and Suddenly water from the basin splashed all over my face (eyes, nose and mouth), clothes and hands after water touching the basin. During that time I didn’t clean my face and hands as other people were waiting behind me and I was little drunk, so closed the water with same hands and went back for drinks. After that I touched my cloth (I was wearing), my cards, phone, shoes etc and came home and slept with same not cleaned hands, face and clothes on my bed as I was drunk. The next day I woke up in the morning went to my kitchen to drink water, touched my glasses, opened refrigerator, pressed my clothes and did brushing with the same not cleaned hand, face and clothes and went back to sleep as it was weekend. When I woke up I was little unwell and took shower only after 2 days. In this 2 days I touched and used most items at my home. Since water touched from basin splashed back into my eyes, nose, mouth, hands, clothes and I also touched my other clothes, eye glasses, cards, phones, iron box, kitchen, laptop, tables, slept on my bed with the same un cleaned hands, face and clothes for couple of days, do I get any STDs? Do I need to do any STD testing? And do I need to clean my complete house including my bed, pillow, phone, laptop, kitchen, clothes, eye glasses, cards, iron box, shoes, toilet, bathroom etc and then use it? Sorry for the very lengthy question as I was so worried and depressed/obsessed with this incident. Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

I can tell this incident has really been on your mind. You don’t need to worry about getting a sexually transmitted infection (STI) this way. We do not see any STI’s being transmitted through water in dirty sinks. The definition of an STI is that it is spread by people when they are having sex.

You do not need to do any special cleaning of your things, and you don’t need STI testing. It sounds like it was a really yucky sink but you can put it out of your mind now. If you are finding it hard to stop thinking about it, it can help to look for some strategies to reduce anxiety.
