Home / Answered Questions / Hi, I’m a 30year old gay man and I was tested positive for rectal chlamydia and got treated with 1 dose of azithromycin, my Boyfriend was also given 1 dose of azithromycin. We waited 2 weeks before we engaged in unprotected anal Sex again. During this time both of us had been monogamous. I tested negative for reveal chalmydia 1 week after the unprotected anal Sec, so that would be 4 weeks after taking azithromycin. I would like to know how likely it would be to self infect other parts of your body during the first week of taking azithromycin ? And also does 1 dose of azithromycin cure chlamydia in multiple locations on the body?

Hi, thanks for your questions. The azithromycin  that you were given is one of the effective treatments for chlamydia when it is in the throat, penis or rectum. When you take the azithromycin, it treats the chlamydia in all parts of your body. So for instance if chlamydia was present in your throat but was not detected on the throat swab, the azithromycin you have taken would have treated this too. This means there is not a concern about self infecting other parts of the body as all are being treated.  Hope this helps. Health Nurse
