Hi, a tint little raised area only a couple mm in diameter showed up 2 weeks ago on the head of my penis. It is painless and seems harmless but i am interested in getting tested for an STD. whats involved in getting tested?

Getting tested is usually quite easy. First you need to find a clinic and either make an appointment or show up if the clinic takes walk-in appointments. You can also be tested at your own doctor or health care provider’s office. Use our Find a clinic section if you need help finding a clinic in your area.

You can also check out our Get tested section for lots of information on testing but I will try to give you a quick version here.

Testing usually starts with a doctor or nurse asking you some questions to help figure out what testing needs to be done. Try to be as honest as you can with your answers as this will make sure that you get the right testing done.

Because you have notice a raised area on the head of your penis and if you are comfortable doing so, it would be good to have the health care provider take a look to see if any special testing is needed to help figure out the cause. Some times they will be able to tell you just by looking at the area.

You will also most likely be asked to give a urine sample and a blood sample. Other tests maybe recommended depending on your answers to the questions you are asked at the beginning of your visit.

Most test results will take a week or 2 to come back from the lab and depending on where you test you may be asked to return or call for results. Many clinics will call you if your results show that you have any STIs but do not call if the results show no STIs.

Good for you for taking care of your sexual health by testing.
