Hi
We don’t see HIV being passed when receiving oral sex. Using a condom for vaginal sex offers good protection against HIV.
There are some other STI that can be passed when receiving oral sex without a condom. Have a look at our “Know your chances” web page, it provides information on your chances of getting or passing an STI depending on how you are having sex.
I don’t know you full medical or sexual history and I am not sure if you felt comfortable talking to the doctor about your sexual history. I would be interested to see what urine test the doctor did for you. In some situations they will just do a urine dip stick while you are in a clinic to help them determine if someone has a urinary tract infection (UTI).
The symptoms you have described of discomfort/itch around the urethra could be symptoms of a STI. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are two STI that can cause symptoms like this. I would make sure the doctor tested for these two STI. If your chlamydia and gonorrhea tests are negative and you still have these symptoms, it would be worthwhile going back to the doctor’s office. There are some other STI that can cause these types of symptoms but are not generally tested for. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to the doctor about your sexual history you can always come to another clinic. Have a look at our clinic finder for a clinic in your area.
We don’t see HIV passing with the type of risk you have described, but since many STI do not show symptoms we recommend people go for regular STI testing. As you have been thinking about HIV it wouldn’t hurt to get HIV testing when you get tested for the other STI. We find if someone is really worried about HIV passing to them, a HIV non-reactive test result can bring good peace of mind.
Have a look at our “STIs at a glance” chart, it provides information on how long you need to wait before getting tested (window period).
