How long should I wait to get an HIV test after a possible encounter that happened without using protection in BC?

Hi,

Thanks for writing.

The standard HIV test in BC is the 4th generation test, which is 75% accurate at 3 weeks after your encounter, 95% accurate at 6 weeks, and 99%+ after 3 months.

Some people will want to get tested as soon as possible, and then will re-test after 3 months for their final result. Other people will wait until after 3 months to get tested, so they get the most accurate result. Whichever feels good to you!

If you’re looking to get tested you can go to your family doctor, a walk-in clinic, or an STI clinic. For a list of STI Clinics near you check out our Clinic Finder tool.
