Home / Answered Questions / I am not sure whether I should be angry or amused by this. Today I went to Life Labs for U/A C&S, for which I have a standing order…recently renewed. To my shock my doctor’s associate had included tests for STDs and did not inform me of this. I was married for 48 years and am a widow for 12 years now, and celibate for those 12 years. You can imagine my shock. I could have refused the test, but had it done and will be having a come to Jesus talk with the associate. I would like to know if there is a registry or records kept at BCCDC on everyone who is tested. Because I do not want to be on any such record.

Hi, thanks for your question. Usually assessment of STI risk factors would have been discussed with you and your consent obtained before any STI tests were ordered on your panel. As you have pointed out you do not have any known risk for sexually transmitted infections and therefore the test would not be ordered. This is definitely something to discuss with the doctor who ordered the tests.
There isn’t a registry at BCCDC of everyone who has STI testing done anywhere. The record of the test ordered for you and the results are with the lab where the test is done and shared with your doctor. If the STI results are positive for any of the tests, that result is shared with BCCDC so that there can be follow up to see the person was informed of the infection, was treated with the appropriate antibiotics and assistance offered to contact and treat partners. Hope this helps. Health Nurse
