It’s difficult to know if your sore throat is caused by an STI. Having a sore throat is a common symptom and can be caused by many different things, most of the time it is a viral infection that causes this. Gonorrhea and chlamydia can be in the throat but most of the time they cause no symptoms.

When treating bacterial STI you need the correct antibiotic at the correct dose for it to work. It is possible if the wrong antibiotic or dose was given that it could reduce the symptoms but not cure the infection.

As you are concerned that it could be an STI I would just recommend going to your family doctor or clinic and asking for a throat swab that would test for gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Have a look at our clinic finder if you need to find a clinic in your area.

At our STI clinics if a client is currently taking antibiotics or has recently been on antibiotics we would recommend waiting 4-6 weeks before doing any gonorrhea or chlamydia testing. But if someone had symptoms or was concerned something could have passed to them we would do a gonorrhea and chlamydia test straight away and ask them to repeat the test in 4-6 weeks if the first test was negative.
