It seems like you are asking about the window period for the HIV tests. We estimate that 95% of tests are accurate 6 weeks after a person is exposed to HIV. As the weeks go on and get closer to 12 weeks, that estimate keeps going up, so it is very unlikely that someone who was negative at 11 weeks after an exposure will be positive at 12 weeks. I have never seen this in the clinics where we work.

If this worry is really bothering you, you could get another test when it has been over 12 weeks and you will know that you are out of the window period and that the test is accurate.

We know many people are very worried about HIV, even if they are not at high risk, and have had negative tests. If you can’t stop worrying about HIV, it might help to speak with a counsellor or with someone you trust about this.
