Home / Answered Questions / My heterosexual female partner has had unprotected sex with a married hetrosexual male various times in the past 18 months. I want her to get tested for any STD’s and she has agreed. How am I able to know what the results are? She doesn’t think it is a big deal because the other person was in a long term relationship as well but they would only see each other on annual trips visiting family. Although she may be right and the time frame involved should have shown something at this time, I am still concerned. She is having a “blood test” but doesn’t she need to request a specific test for STD’s and in particular HIV? It has been since before we were married, almost 20 years ago that we had tests so I am out of the loop in regards to the details of how this works. Am I allowed to know or will I only be notified on a positive test? And how am I able to know she has requested the appropriate test?

The only way for you to know your partner’s results is if she agrees to share them with you. Some clinics will print results for their clients and if this is an option where she tests, you could ask to get a printout. Clinics may also allow partners to be present when results are given so you could also check into this but again it would only be with her consent.

You are right that she will have to ask specifically to be tested for STIs and HIV. Blood tests are usually used to check for syphilis and HIV but they cannot test for gonorrhea or Chlamydia, specific tests have to be done to check for those.
