After I got home pretty well a week after I had the encounter with the sp I got strep throat. So I went to the doctor and got penicillin for it and it was gone within 4 or so days. Now since I had strep throat my throat just kinda feels swollen and dry at times. Iam really freaking out because Iam worried I may have contracted something. Thanks.

Hi

I don’t know your full medical or sexual history so it is difficult to say what is going on but I can give you some general information based on what you have written.

It sounds like you received unprotected oral sex from an SP, I am not sure if you performed unprotected oral sex on the SP as well. It is possible that some sexually transmitted infections (STI) can be passed when receiving or giving unprotected oral sex e.g. gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis etc…

Have a look at our “Know your chances” web page, it provides information on your chances of getting or passing an STI when having oral sex.

If you are concerned that an STI could have passed to your throat it would be worth going back to the doctor for a test. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to the doctor about this you could always come to one of our STI clinics.

Provincial STI clinic

Bute street clinic.

It is also common for me to see men at the clinic who get concerned about HIV when they develop flu like illness after receiving oral sex. Just remember that we don’t see HIV being passed when receiving oral sex and there are no symptoms that are caused by just having HIV. The symptoms people get with a HIV illness are common symptoms that can be caused by many different conditions e.g. strep throat.

Most STI do not show symptoms so it would be worthwhile getting an STI test.
