Does the rash in acute HIV infection appears and disappears, or it just stay for 1 week or 2?

It’s difficult to say as people will have different symptoms and for different lengths of time. For example this illness usually lasts less than two weeks but it can be as long as 10 weeks.

During the early stage of a new HIV infection, 90% of people will experience flu-like symptoms. This usually happens about two to four weeks after they come in contact with HIV. Have a look at our HIV seroconversion illness web page for more information on what symptoms can appear.

Just remember there are no symptoms that are caused by just having HIV. The symptoms people get with a HIV seroconversion illness are common symptoms that can be caused by many different conditions. The only way to find out if you have HIV is by going for a HIV test.

If you develop flu like symptoms and are concerned about a risk that could pass HIV it would be a good idea to see a healthcare professional for a HIV test.
