Hi

I would suggest going for a HSV type specific blood test. It is common for us to get requests for a HSV blood test for this reason and it makes sense to do the blood test for more information about your status, given that most of the time people with HSV notice no symptoms.

You can go to any clinic to request this blood test. The HSV-IgG is a non-type specific HSV test which can be done for free in BC. This non-specific test will just show a reactive or non-reactive result. It will show reactive if there is HSV-1, HSV-2 or both detected. Given how common HSV-1 is, this test comes back reactive often. There is also HSV type specific testing available which will let you know what type of HSV is there, but this test is usually not covered and has to be paid for.

You can get the HSV-IgG test done first and if this test comes back reactive, just ask for the HSV type specific test to see what type of HSV you have. You can also ask for and pay for the HSV type specific test at the beginning if you prefer.

Let us know if you have any more questions or concerns.
