This is the dashboard report on STI and HIV trends for the second quarter of 2016 (April – June). These reports are posted quarterly to provide a snapshot of HIV and sexually transmitted infections in British Columbia.
The dashboard below describes the number of HIV and STIs reported to public health in the second quarter (Q2) of 2016, as of July 10, 2016. The risk factor categories for HIV—MSM, PWID, and HET—are from the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2015 due to expected reporting delays.
There was a slight increase in new HIV diagnoses this year compared with last. Most of the increase was observed in females. Information on gender for 3 new diagnoses of HIV have not yet been received.
Chlamydia continues to increase at rate of about 8% per year, which is consistent with previous year-to-year increases. While substantial increases were observed for this year-to-date for both gonorrhea and syphilis, this may be due to quarterly variability. If this trend continues, we project that there will be about the same number of gonorrhea and syphilis cases reported this year as last year.
Please note that this dashboard represents preliminary data and is subject to change. For more information on HIV and sexually transmitted infections in BC, please see the BCCDC annual STI and HIV reports.
