Webinar Presentation: The resurgence of syphilis in British Columbia

The Pacific AIDS Network (PAN), in cooperation with the BC Centre for Disease Control, is hosting a 1 hour webinar on Thursday, May 16th from 1:00 - 2:00 PM. Please join us for this important presentation and discussion.

Title: The Resurgence of Syphilis in British Columbia: Who is affected? What are the challenges? How can we improve our response?

Date & time: Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 1:00 PM

Presenters: Travis Salway Hottes (STI/HIV Epidemiologist) and Gillian Hill-Carroll (STI Nurse), Clinical Prevention Services, BC Centre for Disease Control

Summary: Over the last decade and a half, rates of infectious syphilis have increased in British Columbia, now reaching the highest rate in more than 30 years. The majority of recent cases are among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, and nearly two-thirds of cases are known to be HIV positive.

During this webinar we will:

  • Review the recent epidemiology of infectious syphilis in BC;
  • Describe the current approach to preventing, diagnosing, and treating cases;
  • Discuss some challenges to these approaches; and,
  • Open a dialogue about how public health, community, and community service organizations can build on and improve the current response to the epidemic.

We invite you to bring your feedback, experiences, and observations to this session.

Registration: Registration is now open and is available here. The webinar is free but pre-registration is required.

A conference call-in component will be incorporated into this webinar for the Q & A portion of the presentation. Dial-in information will be sent to you prior to the webinar.
