Contraception and Pregnancy (59)

I had sex without a condom on the last day of my period, which was barely any blood. I’m worried I might be pregnant because I have some symptoms like tender breasts, cramping.

Hi

Tender breasts and cramping could be a sign that you are pregnant. It is difficult to know as these symptoms can be caused by other conditions as well. The most common symptom is that your period is late.

The best way to find out is by doing a pregnancy test. Your health care provider can do this test for you or you could also buy one from your local drugstore.

It can be stressful dealing with an unexpected pregnancy. In BC Canada we have support lines available with people who can help you work through your options and provide support. Have a look at our “I might be pregnant” page for these telephone numbers and web pages.

what is ejaculation and how can we abort pregnancy without going to an hospital

Ejaculation usually happens during sex or masturbation. It is when semen (cum) comes out of the penis. It can also happen when guys sleep which is sometimes called a “wet dream”.

To abort a pregnancy without going to a hospital, you can go to a clinic that offers this service. In BC women can call any clinic that offers abortions to make an appointment. During this appointment the health care provider at the clinic will discuss with you the different options for ending a pregnancy. Most of these options can be done at the clinic itself and will not require a hospital visit.

To find a clinic in your area you can check out Options for Sexual Health.

I HAD UNPROTECTED SEX THE PAST WEEK NOW I HAD STOMACH SORE AND BOB A LOT.I SUSPECT IT MAY BE SIGN FOR PREGNANCY

Hi

The most common signs for being pregnant are having a missed period, tender swollen breast, feeling tired, nausea with or with vomiting.

I don’t know your full medical/sexual history or what other symptoms you are having but I would also recommend seeing a health care professional about STI testing.

With having unprotected sex it is possible to get pregnant or have an STI pass. The health professional would be able to do a pregnancy test and STI testing for you. They could also discuss the symptoms you are having.

Have a look at our clinic finder for a clinic in your area.

Does birth control cause weight gain?

Hi

There are a few different types of birth control. A small number of these can have weight gain as a possible side effect. This means that it does not happen to everyone who uses that method.

Have a look at the sexandu page on different birth control methods. They list how they work as well as any possible side effects like weight gain.

I would just recommend talking with your health care provider about what method would work for you. They would be able to see what side effects you are concerned about, your medical history and what preference you have in how it is used.

Also have a look at the Options for Sexual Health website for different Birth Control Options. They specialize in birth control and have clinics around BC.

They also have the Sex Sense line on 1-800-SEX-SENSE if you would prefer talking with someone directly about your personal situation and any concerns you may have around birth control.

I had unprotected sex for the first time about 4 to 5 weeks ago. Within an hour of sexual intercourse, I took a contraceptive pill and a week to a week and a half later I got my period. I have no fatigue, or nausea, and my breasts aren’t tender. Am I pregnant? Or just over stressing my action?

If you took Plan B (the Morning after pill) and then had your period a week later it is unlikely that you are pregnant.

If you had not had your period and it was 4-5 weeks after taking Plan B or if you were having fatigue, nausea or breast tenderness it would be a good idea to do a pregnancy test.

can she fall pregnant if she was the one on top?

Yes, a woman can get pregnant if she is on top during sex.

The best way to prevent pregnancy is to use condoms or another form of birth control.

can i have an IUD if i have a yeast infection and will eating mushrooms worsen my yeast infection?

Hi there,

You can have an IUD put in if you have a yeast infection. Yeast is normally in the vagina – we call it an “infection”, but really it is just an “overgrowth” of microbes that are normally in the vagina. If you are very itchy and uncomfortable with the yeast, you might want to wait until after you treat it to go get the IUD inserted. We use a speculum in your vagina when we put in an IUD, and this can be painful if your vagina is very sore from the yeast.

Eating mushrooms will not make your yeast infection worse.

I’m going away with my bf for a couple days. i don’t use BC and only condoms, I’m wondering if we could just pick up plan b pills from the clinic just in case?

You will have to check at your clinic to see if they will give you Plan B to take with you. Often youth and STI clinics have Plan B available for when a risk of pregnancy has happened but they would give you the pills to take at the clinic and may not give them to you to take away.

If you have had issues with condoms in the past, having Plan B on hand is a good backup but you may have to pay for it. It is available at most pharmacies or you can check with Options for Sexual Health as they usually have lower prices for Plan B and other forms of Birth Control.

Hi

There are a number of different things that may cause you to miss your period. For example being pregnant, low body weight, increased exercise, stress, hormonal imbalances etc…

As you have done two home pregnancy tests it is safe to say being pregnant is not the cause of your missed periods. I would recommend going to see a health professional and discussing your situation with them to see what could be causing the change for you. Let us know if you need help finding someone in your area.

Missing your period is not a symptom of having a STI. The most common symptom of an STI is feeling fine. If you are concerned an STI could have been passed to you just talk with the health professional you see and they could order some testing for you.

Have a look at the options for sexual health website for birth control information. They list the different options that are available and have a number of clinics around BC.

I took a plan B pill today and had unproductive sex within 3-4 hours of it. Is there still a chance of pregnancy? Thanks

Hi

Yes, there is still a chance that you could become pregnant. This is because Emergency contraception (Plan B) lowers the chances of getting pregnant, but it is not as effective as using a regular long term method of birth control.

Usually Plan B is taken after unprotected sex and it is not known how well it will protect against pregnancy when you take the pills before you have sex.

However, if you take pills within 24 hours of having sex, they should provide some protection against pregnancy.

If you do not get a period within 2 – 3 weeks, we recommend that you get a pregnancy test done.

Have a look at the following links for more information on Plan B
