Pristinamycin (Pyostacine®) is an antibiotic taken by mouth for the treatment of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) when other treatments can not be used. Pristinamycin is only available by special permission through Health Canada which must be requested by your healthcare provider.
Fosfomycin is an antibiotic taken by mouth for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), including bladder infections.
Medroxyprogesterone (Depo-Provera®) a form of progesterone given by injection into a muscle for the prevention of pregnancy. For more information refer to the Options for Sexual Health medication handout.
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic taken by mouth for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
Levonorgestrel (Plan B® or generic equivalent), is a progestin-only emergency contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy after sex. The tablet (pill) should be taken as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours of last sexual contact. It can work up to 5 days (120 hours) after sex, but is less effective with time.
Bicillin® L-A (long-acting penicillin G benzathine) is the preferred antibiotic treatment for syphilis. It is given by intramuscular injection in two divided doses into each hip/buttock muscle at the same visit.
Acyclovir (Zovirax®) and Valacyclovir are antiviral medications taken by mouth for the treatment of genital herpes.
Azithromycin is an antibiotic taken for the treatment of certain sexually transmitted infections.
