Gay and bisexual men's resources

If you identify as a gay or bisexual man, there are some resources that you may be interested in.

Safer Sex

Your chances of getting an STI depend on the kind of sex you are having, whether or not you are using protection and how many other people in your group have the STI.

STI testing

In BC, rates of STI and HIV are high among men who have sex with men. If you are sexually active, it is a good idea to get regular STI testing. In general, getting tested at least once a year is a good idea. Men who have more than one sex partner, or who have sex without condoms with casual partners, should get tested every 3 to 6 months.

Gay and bisexual men can get free hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines. Learn more about where to get the vaccines at ImmunizeBC.

Some types of HPV (human papillomavirus) are associated with anal cancer in men who have sex with men, especially in HIV positive men. The Gardasil vaccine offers protection against HPV and is available for some gay and bisexual men.The anal Pap smear is a test that can find early changes that may become cancer. HIV-positive men should talk to their health care provider about getting anal Pap smears.
